Electrum, Pertamina, Gogoro and Gesits’ enhanced collaboration accelerates Indonesia’s two-wheel electric vehicle ecosystem

EV trial in Jakarta for Gojek’s GoRide service will also be expanded this year

Jakarta, 22 February 2022 - Electrum, the joint venture between Gojek and TBS Energi Utama, together with Pertamina, Gogoro and Gesits, announced today an enhanced collaboration to accelerate the development of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Indonesia. The collaboration is in line with the Indonesian Government’s plans to prioritize its sustainable energy transition as a key pillar at the upcoming G20 Summit in Indonesia.

As part of the collaboration, Electrum, Pertamina, Gogoro and Gesits will expand their existing commercial trial of two-wheel EVs in South Jakarta to encompass thousands of units this year, with the EVs continuing to be operated by Gojek driver partners until the end of 2022. This is part of Gojek’s ongoing efforts and commitment to transition its fleet to 100% EVs by 2030. The results of this trial will also inform how Electrum further scales its efforts in EV manufacturing, battery packaging, battery swap infrastructure and financing for EV ownership.

To date, the existing commercial trial has been well received by both Gojek driver-partners and consumers, with the use of EVs resulting in operational cost savings of up to 30%, or IDR 500,000-700,000 per month, for drivers.

This latest collaboration will leverage all parties’ respective strengths to further develop Indonesia’s EV infrastructure. Electrum will act as the overall integrator and developer of the EV ecosystem, tapping Gojek's presence in Indonesia and TBS’ capabilities in the energy sector. Pertamina, through its subsidiary Pertamina Patra Niaga, will enable usage of its gas stations for battery swapping, supported by Gogoro’s EVs and battery swapping technology, as well as Gesits’ EVs and other related infrastructure.

The latest collaboration between Electrum, Pertamina, Gogoro and Gesits was acknowledged today by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, alongside Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of State Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir, Minister of Investment/Chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia, and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif.

In his remarks, President Joko Widodo said, "The government is fully committed to moving towards new and renewable energy, including accelerating the transition to EVs. As such, I deeply appreciate the efforts of companies that are developing the EV ecosystem, from the upstream to the downstream. We are working towards our target of reducing carbon emissions by 29% by 2030, and we hope that by 2060, we will be able to achieve zero emissions or net zero emissions."

Pandu Sjahrir, President Director of Electrum and Vice-President Director of TBS, said: “To electrify transportation in Indonesia, it is necessary to have integrators and developers who are committed to building the EV ecosystem. Electrum has taken on this role in our latest collaboration with Pertamina, Gogoro and Gesits, to enable deeper collaboration between the various players in Indonesia’s EV industry. By working closely with state-owned enterprises and the private sector, we aim to make the infrastructure for EVs more widely available in Indonesia, and encourage more people to give EVs a try."

Kevin Aluwi, Gojek CEO and Electrum Director, said: "With motorbikes being the primary mode of transportation for many Indonesians, we believe that starting with two-wheel EVs is the right strategy to kickstart the process of change. We are excited to expand our commercial trial for two-wheel EVs in Jakarta, which will enable us to gain deeper insights from more driver partners and consumers, including their user experience, cost savings and the ease of battery swapping. By leveraging these insights, we will be able to further scale up Electrum’s plans, accelerate adoption of EVs, and meet our goal of fully electrifying our fleet by 2030."

Nicke Widyawati, President Director of Pertamina, said: “As a major player in Indonesia's energy sector, Pertamina is committed to supporting the government's efforts to accelerate the energy transition. We are doing this through the expansion of EV charging stations and battery swapping stations, which are aimed at meeting motorcyclists' need for speed and convenience. At the same time, we see an opportunity for Indonesia to develop a common standard for EV batteries, which will make EV prices more affordable in the future. Pertamina will continue to support the government's energy transition initiatives, together with Gojek, Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), Gesits, and Electrum. As part of our efforts to actively develop the EV infrastructure, Pertamina, through Pertamina Patra Niaga, is already operating 14 battery swapping stations with 212 batteries across seven Green Energy Station (GES) gas stations, with an aim to further expand this in the future."

Muhammad Samyarto, President Director of PT Wika Industri Manufaktur (WIMA), said: “Indonesia has begun to transform its mobility system to EVs. At Gesits, we believe that our collaboration with Electrum and the other stakeholders will help us to accelerate change and deliver on our promise of transitioning to sustainable energy. At the same time, we will be able to play our part in moving all of society towards smart, efficient and environmentally-friendly urban vehicles.”

Horace Luke, Founder and CEO, Gogoro, said: "Gogoro is expanding its partnership with Gojek, Electrum and Pertamina to transform urban transportation in Indonesia and provide a path for Gojek riders and all Indonesians to embrace sustainable electric transportation. Gogoro battery swapping is a new generation of electric fueling that provides an open platform for two-wheel vehicle makers to introduce new electric vehicles that enable fast, safe and easy to use refueling.”
